Our history

Claire Cooke and Aymie Backler established Mirror Mirror in 2009 to explore the educational potential of early / pre cinema practice and the history and aesthetics of science and entertainment.  Aymie left the company in 2014.

Claire is a curator, lecturer and facilitator with experience in commissioning and producing art exhibitions and projects, cinema exhibition, music and heritage education and events. She has previously worked for the British Film Institute, SPACE, National Trust and British Museum and a number of micro galleries in east London. She is currently a lecturer at Goldsmiths, University of London and also works in widening participation for the Royal Academy of Music.

She can be seen demonstrating the magic lantern and some of Mirror Mirror’s most popular slides as part of a series of films at the V& A’s Photography Gallery. Also available on youtube here

Claire is also interested in design and architecture education and in 2018 established:  Architecture For All which explores the built environment in a creative and playful way.

She about to undertakeĀ a PhD at University of Glasgow on the emotional, aesthetic and tangible effects of physics and magic (as manifested in playgrounds….)
